Utah's only lookout tower ...

My family's cabin is only an hour or so away from Ute Mountain Lookout, on the Ashley National Forest.   It was restored by the Forest Service a number of years ago, and is now occasionally staffed by volunteers, mostly as a visitor attraction.  It has a unique design, with the steps cantilevered out from the tower legs, rather than nested inside them.

The place has more than one claim to fame in the lookout world.  Though other fire observation sites existed in Utah, Ute Mountain may have been the state's only example of the live-in tower concept that was used throughout the west.  More recently, interpretive rangers kept carrier pigeons at the tower, which they would send off on missions to a nearby visitors center.

Finally, Ute Mountain was the primary lookout prototype for the game designers who built the Firewatch video game ... which may or may not be something for the tower to boast about.
